Crystallized mako — condensed Lifestream containing the Planet's accumulated knowledge, usable as magic when slotted into weapons and armor. The foundation of FFVII's magic system and a key resource driving global conflict.
Materia is solidified Lifestream — the Planet's memories and knowledge compressed into crystalline form over centuries. When equipped, materia grants its wielder access to spells, abilities, and summons by interfacing with the user's spirit energy. Shinra mass-produces artificial materia from refined mako, while natural materia forms slowly in mako-rich areas. Wutai's materia tradition predates Shinra and represents a more respectful relationship with the Planet's gifts. Yuffie's obsessive theft of materia stems from her desire to restore Wutai's power. The existence of special materia — Black, White, and Summon — drives much of FFVII's central conflict.
Small, luminous orbs about the size of a marble, glowing in various colors depending on type: green for magic, yellow for command, blue for support, red for summon, and purple for independent. Each orb swirls with inner light like a miniature galaxy.
