Mako energy is the central conflict of Final Fantasy VII made tangible. Shinra discovered that the Planet's Lifestream could be extracted, refined, and used as an energy source of unprecedented power, and built a global monopoly around it. Mako powers Midgar, fuels military technology, and when combined with Jenova cells, creates SOLDIER super-warriors. But mako extraction drains the Lifestream — literally killing the Planet to keep the lights on. This ecological horror drives AVALANCHE's resistance and represents the game's core environmental message. Excessive mako exposure causes poisoning, madness, and mutation in living beings.
In raw form, a luminous green liquid that flows in rivers beneath the earth. When refined, a concentrated glowing substance that powers reactors and machinery with an eerie green hue. Mako exposure gives SOLDIER operatives their distinctive glowing blue-green eyes.
