An apocalyptic materia that summons Meteor — a spell capable of destroying the entire Planet. Hidden within the Temple of the Ancients as both its structure and its ultimate trap, sought by Sephiroth to wound the Planet.
The Black Materia contains the most destructive spell ever created — Meteor, which summons a celestial body to collide with the Planet. Sephiroth seeks it to wound the Planet so grievously that the Lifestream will concentrate at the impact point, allowing him to absorb its energy and become a god. The materia was sealed within the Temple of the Ancients, which IS the materia at compressed scale. After Cait Sith sacrifices himself to retrieve it, Sephiroth manipulates Cloud — through Jenova's cells — into handing it over. Cloud gives Sephiroth the Black Materia twice, both times against his own will, demonstrating Sephiroth's terrifying hold over him.
A dark, almost black orb that absorbs light rather than emitting it, pulsing with a deep crimson glow from within. Larger than standard materia, it radiates an oppressive, dread-inducing energy that unsettles anyone nearby.
