Jenova

Character from Final Fantasy VII by Square Enix

An alien entity that crash-landed on the Planet two thousand years ago, nearly wiping out the Cetra, now used by Shinra as a bioweapon catalyst and by Sephiroth as an instrument of apocalypse.

Two thousand years before the events of Final Fantasy VII, something fell from the sky and crashed into the Northern Crater. The Cetra called it the Calamity from the Skies. It mimicked their forms, infiltrated their communities, and spread a plague that nearly exterminated them. The few surviving Cetra sealed it away, and the Planet grew a massive wound-scar — the Northern Crater — around the impact site. Shinra discovered the sealed entity and named it Jenova, believing it to be an Ancient. Professor Gast and later Hojo used Jenova's cells as the foundation for the SOLDIER program, injecting them into human subjects alongside Mako to create supersoldiers. Sephiroth was the pinnacle of this research. Jenova is not truly dead, not truly alive, and not truly anything terrestrial. Its cells retain a collective will, drawn to reunite — the Reunion instinct that Sephiroth exploits to summon his clones to the Northern Crater. Whether Jenova controls Sephiroth or Sephiroth controls Jenova is one of the story's deepest ambiguities. The body in Shinra's lab moves on its own. Pieces of it transform into monsters. It is a contagion wearing the shape of a mother.

Appearance

Jenova's true form is a pale, biomechanical horror — a towering humanoid figure with blue-grey skin, exposed musculature, and a single visible eye set in a face half-covered by organic plating. Tubes and organic conduits snake across its body. Its torso is encased in what appears to be both armor and exoskeleton, fused together. The body is housed in a containment tank in the Shinra building, partially dismembered, leaking Mako-green fluid. It radiates wrongness — something fundamentally alien to the Planet's biosphere, a thing that mimics life without being alive.
