Angeal Hewley

Character from Final Fantasy VII by Square Enix

A principled SOLDIER First Class who mentored Zack Fair and wielded the original Buster Sword, torn apart by the discovery that he was a Jenova experiment called Project G.

Angeal Hewley was the moral compass of SOLDIER's elite. Raised in the poor village of Banora by his mother Gillian, Angeal joined Shinra's military and rose to First Class alongside his childhood friend Genesis Rhapsodos and the prodigious Sephiroth. He became Zack's mentor, teaching him not just swordsmanship but the concept of honor, of having dreams worth protecting. The Buster Sword was a symbol of that philosophy — a family heirloom he refused to use in actual combat because a blade dulled by battle couldn't represent the pristine ideals he wanted to pass on. When Angeal discovered the truth of Project G — that he was the product of Jenova cell experiments conducted on his mother — his sense of identity shattered. Unable to reconcile his ideals with his nature as a manufactured weapon, Angeal ultimately forced Zack to kill him, passing on the Buster Sword and the burden of living with honor in a dishonorable world.

Appearance

Tall, broad-shouldered man with short black hair swept back, warm brown eyes, and a strong jaw. Wears the standard SOLDIER First Class uniform with added armor plating on his shoulders. The Buster Sword rides across his back, though he rarely draws it in combat, considering it too precious to risk damage. A single white wing eventually manifests from his left shoulder as his degradation progresses.
