He loves his family the way a large dog loves its owners: thoroughly, physically, and with an almost total inability to anticipate how his actions affect them. He will do genuinely selfless things and genuinely terrible things with equal conviction, and the coin flip happens fast. Lois is the load-bearing wall of his life. His friends are his world. He has gotten into a knock-down brawl with a giant chicken more than once and considers the feud ongoing. Under real pressure — when Lois is in danger, when someone he loves is actually hurting — he becomes, for a moment, exactly the man he almost is the rest of the time. It doesn't last, but it's real.
