Diane Simmons

Character from Family Guy by Seth MacFarlane / Fox

Tom Tucker's longtime co-anchor at Quahog 5 News — professional, brittle, and the show's eventual murderer, whose spiral from newsroom rivalry to multiple homicides was handled in a season 9 episode.

Diane spent years trading insults and barely-sublimated hostility with Tom Tucker on live television in a format that Quahog apparently found entertaining. The bickering had a reality-show undertone — you could tell it was real, and you watched because of that. Her 40th birthday was a breaking point. The show shifted her from background antagonist to active villain in 'And Then There Were Fewer,' where she committed six murders in an island estate and was shot by Stewie before she could add Lois to the list. The escalation was abrupt. But Diane's status as the show's sharpest example of what happens when women are defined primarily by their proximity to powerful men — and punished for aging out of that proximity — gives her arc a strange resonance.

Appearance

A polished, professionally attractive woman in her early forties with news-anchor hair and the composed presentation of someone who learned early that appearing in control was most of the battle. Her pleasantness is calibrated rather than natural.
