A fortress city built to defend humanity's last hope — skyscrapers that retract into the earth, weapons hidden in every block, and the constant knowledge that the next alarm could be the last.
Tokyo-3 was constructed beginning in 2005, ostensibly as Japan's new capital to replace Tokyo-2. In reality, it was designed from the ground up as a fortress to house NERV and defend against the Angels. Every building is mounted on retractable hydraulic platforms. Power sockets and weapons caches for Evangelion units are distributed throughout the city grid. Beneath the surface lies the GeoFront — a massive spherical cavern that is actually the Black Moon of Lilith, containing NERV Headquarters. The population is entirely composed of NERV personnel, their families, and support workers. After the battles with Zeruel and Armisael, most civilians are evacuated, and the city becomes increasingly hollow — a fortress defending nothing but itself.
Modern Japanese city built on the site of Hakone, surrounded by mountains. Lake Ashi visible nearby. During Angel attacks, buildings retract into the GeoFront below like sinking teeth, armor plating seals the surface, and weapons batteries emerge. At peace it looks like an ordinary city; in battle it transforms into a mechanical jaw. Population declining as attacks escalate.
