Eva Cages

Location from Neon Genesis Evangelion by Hideaki Anno / Gainax

The vast underground bays where the Evangelions are stored, maintained, and readied for launch — LCL-filled chambers where biomechanical giants stand restrained and waiting.

The Eva Cages are where NERV stores and maintains its Evangelion units between deployments. There are at least seven cages in the facility. Each cage connects to a launch catapult system that can propel an Eva to the surface in seconds. Entry plug insertion and LCL flooding happen here before launch. The cages are also where maintenance, repairs, and synchronization tests occur. Seeing an Evangelion up close in its cage — restrained, silent, enormous — is the first moment most people realize these aren't machines. They're alive.

Appearance

Cavernous vertical chambers, each sized to hold a single Evangelion standing upright. The Evas are partially submerged in LCL coolant, locked into restraining bolts and maintenance gantries. Umbilical cables coil along the walls. Launch catapult rails connect each cage to the surface. Harsh industrial lighting. The scale is cathedral-like — human technicians are insects on the gantries around the Eva's shoulders.
