A hidden chamber in NERV where rows of Rei Ayanami clones float in illuminated tanks — the most disturbing room in a facility full of disturbing rooms.
The Dummy Plug Plant is where NERV manufactures the Rei clones used for the Dummy Plug system — Entry Plugs that can operate an Evangelion without a human pilot by emulating Rei's thought patterns. The plant also serves as the repository for Rei's replacement bodies. When the current Rei dies, a new one is awakened from the tanks with transferred memories. Ritsuko eventually brings Misato and Shinji here to reveal the truth about Rei, then destroys all the clones in a fit of rage against Gendo. It is the physical proof that NERV treats its pilots as replaceable components.
A dark room within NERV HQ filled with cylindrical illuminated tanks, each containing a nude Rei Ayanami clone floating in LCL. The clones are identical, pale, eyes closed. The room is temperature-controlled and sterile. Orange-amber light from the LCL gives everything a warm glow that makes the scene more unsettling, not less.
