A Tokyo-3 middle school classroom where Eva pilots sit alongside children who don't know they're all pilot candidates — normalcy as thin as the glass between them and the next Angel attack.
Class 2-A at Tokyo-3 Municipal Middle School is where Shinji, Rei, Asuka, Toji, Kensuke, and Hikari attend classes. What none of the students know is that every child in this class was selected as a potential Eva pilot candidate. The school operates under constant evacuation protocols, and class size shrinks as Tokyo-3's civilian population declines. The classroom scenes provide the series' rare moments of teen normalcy — gossip, homework, Hikari calling the class to order — against the backdrop of a city under siege. The teacher drones endlessly about Second Impact, which the students have heard so many times they tune it out.
Standard Japanese classroom with rows of desks, a teacher's podium, large windows overlooking Tokyo-3. Laptop computers on each desk. Half the seats are frequently empty — families keep evacuating. The students wear standard uniforms except for Toji in his tracksuit. Evacuation drill notices posted on the bulletin board.
