Ground zero of Second Impact — once an ice-covered continent, now a lifeless red ocean where three billion people's grave marker is the absence of ice.
Antarctica is where it all began. In 2000, the Katsuragi Expedition conducted a contact experiment on Adam, the First Angel, in the White Moon buried beneath the ice. The experiment went catastrophically wrong, triggering Second Impact — an explosion that melted the Antarctic ice cap, shifted the Earth's axis, wiped out all Antarctic life, and set off a chain of tsunamis, wars, and famines that killed half of humanity. The cover story given to the public was a meteorite impact. Misato Katsuragi was fourteen years old and present at the expedition — she is the sole survivor. The red, lifeless ocean that now covers Antarctica is a constant reminder that the beings humanity fights were once humanity's undoing.
Post-Second Impact: no ice, no snow, no life. The entire continent is a barren red-tinted wasteland surrounded by warm, crimson-hued ocean. The explosion that melted the ice cap left nothing living. The water is warm and dead. Satellite imagery shows a permanent scar on the planet.
