LCL

Item from Neon Genesis Evangelion by Hideaki Anno / Gainax

An amber liquid that smells like blood, fills the cockpits of giant war machines, and is literally the blood of a crucified god — the most casually horrifying piece of NERV's daily operations.

LCL is the medium through which Eva pilots synchronize with their machines. It fills the Entry Plug completely, and pilots breathe it through liquid breathing — the oxygenated fluid interfaces directly with the lungs. Through LCL, the pilot's nervous system electrochemically connects with the Eva's, enabling synchronization. The higher the sync ratio, the more the pilot feels the Eva's body as their own. LCL is the blood of Lilith, the Second Angel, pumped from the lake in Terminal Dogma where she is crucified. During Third Impact, the dissolution of individual AT Fields causes human bodies to revert to LCL — the primordial soup of life. Every pilot who climbs into an Entry Plug is breathing angel blood. No one talks about this.

Appearance

Amber-colored, translucent liquid. When an Eva activates and electrical current runs through it, LCL undergoes a 'phase shift' — its density and opacity approach that of air while remaining liquid. Pilots appear to breathe air but occasional bubbles reveal the truth. Smells and tastes like blood.
