The second Production Model Evangelion — a black-armored unit built in America that never saw legitimate combat because an Angel infected it during its first activation test.

Evangelion Unit-03 was built by NERV's Second Branch in Massachusetts, USA, alongside its sister unit, Unit-04. It was transferred to Japan for activation testing at the Matsushiro secondary facility. During transport, the Angel Bardiel hid in a thundercloud and infected the Eva. When Unit-03 activated with Toji Suzuhara as the pilot, Bardiel took control, destroying part of the facility and marching toward Tokyo-3. Shinji refused to fight because his friend was inside. Gendo activated the Dummy System in Unit-01, which systematically dismembered Unit-03 and crushed the entry plug. Unit-03 never operated as intended — it exists in the story only as a vehicle for tragedy.

Appearance

Predominantly black armor with white and red highlights. Darker plating than any other Eva. Rounded helmet top with exaggerated chin. Grey eyes that show red veins when infected by Bardiel. Built on the same Production Model design as Unit-02. When infected, moves in an inhuman, puppet-like manner — limbs at wrong angles, unnatural gait.
