Evangelion Unit-02 is the first Production Model — designed from the ground up for combat, correcting the flaws of both the Prototype (Unit-00) and Test Type (Unit-01). It was built at NERV's Third Branch in Germany with the soul of Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu — specifically, the maternal portion of her soul, which was separated during the contact experiment. Asuka was selected as its pilot because of this maternal connection. Unit-02 features D-Type Equipment capability, a unique shoulder spike rack, and the PK-2 progressive knife. When Asuka's sync rate collapses after Arael's mental attack, the Eva becomes nearly inoperable. In The End of Evangelion, Asuka discovers her mother's soul within Unit-02 and achieves her highest sync rate in a final, desperate battle against nine Mass Production Evangelions.
Striking red armor with orange accents. Four eyes — fiery orange, uniform in color. Bluish-purple blood and blue-gray skin beneath armor (unique among Evas). Helmet has movable sections that cover/uncover the eyes. No hinged jaw piece like Unit-01. Shoulder pylons with distinctive spike rack weapon. Progressive Knife PK-2 resembles a box cutter. Visually the most combat-ready Eva.
