Evangelion Unit-01 is unique among all Evas. While all other Evangelions were derived from Adam, Unit-01 was born from Lilith — making it fundamentally different. It houses the soul of Yui Ikari, Shinji's mother, and this soul is responsible for the Eva's tendency to go berserk and act autonomously to protect its pilot. The Berserk Mode activates without power, without pilot input, and with a savagery that terrifies NERV personnel. After consuming the Angel Zeruel and absorbing its S2 Engine, Unit-01 achieved pseudo-evolution — freeing it from dependence on umbilical power cables. This made it the vessel both SEELE and Gendo need for their competing versions of Instrumentality. Unit-01 is simultaneously humanity's greatest weapon and the trigger for its potential extinction.
