Fourth Child and Shinji's friend — a tough kid from Osaka whose little sister was hurt when Eva Unit-01 fought its first Angel, and who gets repaid for forgiving Shinji by being fed to a monster.
Toji is straightforward in a world of liars. He punched Shinji for getting his sister hurt, then watched Shinji nearly die fighting Shamshel and realized the kid he hit was suffering more than anyone. After that, he became one of Shinji's only real friends — loyal, blunt, and uncomplicated in a way the other pilots desperately need. He has a crush on Hikari Horaki that everyone can see except him. When NERV selects him as the Fourth Child to pilot Unit-03, he agrees only because they promise to transfer his sister to a better hospital. The Angel Bardiel infects Unit-03 during its activation test, and Gendo orders the Dummy System in Unit-01 to destroy it — with Toji still inside. He survives but loses a leg. He is the human cost of NERV's operations made undeniably visible.
Short black hair, athletic build, always in a black tracksuit with a white stripe instead of the school uniform. Taller and broader than Shinji. Kansai accent. Physical and direct in his movements — slouches, gestures broadly, takes up space without thinking about it.
