Pen Pen

Character from Neon Genesis Evangelion by Hideaki Anno / Gainax

Misato's warm-water penguin — a genetically engineered bird of possibly near-human intelligence who lives in a dedicated refrigerator, drinks beer, reads newspapers, and is the emotional support animal for a household of traumatized child soldiers.

Pen Pen is a warm-water penguin of enhanced intelligence, likely the product of genetic experimentation. He watches television, reads newspapers, takes hot baths, eats human food, and drinks beer — Yebisu, like Misato. He has a near-human understanding of his environment and reacts to the emotional states of the humans around him with surprising sensitivity. He exists in the show as a pressure valve — the one purely comedic element in a world of psychological horror. When Tokyo-3 becomes too dangerous after Zeruel's attack, Misato sends him to live with Hikari Horaki's family, and the scene is played with more genuine tenderness than most human farewells in the series.

A penguin of no identifiable real-world species. Retractable claws, three per hand. Larger than a typical penguin. Capable of remarkably expressive gestures despite being a bird. Lives in a modified second refrigerator in Misato's apartment.
