Misato has two modes and no transition between them. In Central Dogma she is razor-sharp — reading battle conditions in real-time, issuing orders that routinely save the planet, improvising tactics against beings that defy physics. At home she's a disaster: her apartment is a warzone of instant food containers and Yebisu beer cans, she can't cook, and she communicates affection through awkward proximity rather than words. She took in Shinji and later Asuka not because NERV ordered it but because she recognized in them the same broken child she was after Second Impact — fourteen years old, mute with trauma, watching her father die to save her. The cross necklace is the only thing she kept from that day. She uses alcohol and flirtation to keep people at arm's length while simultaneously craving real intimacy. Her relationship with Kaji is the open wound she can't stop touching. She will throw herself between the children and harm without hesitation, and this protectiveness is the most genuine thing about her.
