Asuka's mother and key scientist at Gehirn's German branch — the contact experiment with Unit-02 split her soul, drove her insane, and left her daughter watching through a hospital window as she chose a doll over her own child.
Kyoko was a key scientist in the development of Eva Unit-02 at Gehirn's German branch. During the contact experiment, only the maternal portion of her soul was absorbed into Unit-02, leaving behind a woman who was physically alive but psychologically shattered. She was institutionalized, and in her madness, she adopted a doll as a surrogate for Asuka while refusing to acknowledge her actual daughter. She eventually hanged herself. The maternal soul fragment within Unit-02 is what allows Asuka to pilot, and the revelation that her mother was always there — protecting her from inside the machine — comes too late to save either of them.
Short reddish hair, seen only in flashbacks and Asuka's traumatic memories. Lab coat. After the contact experiment, appears gaunt and disconnected, cradling a doll she believes is Asuka while ignoring the real child.
