Kaworu Nagisa

Character from Neon Genesis Evangelion by Hideaki Anno / Gainax

Fifth Child and the final Angel Tabris — the only person who ever told Shinji he was worthy of love, and who chose to die because he believed humans deserved to live.

Kaworu speaks with a gentleness that is almost alien in the world of Evangelion. He says exactly what he means, without deflection or irony, and this radical sincerity is what makes his brief time in the story so devastating. He is Tabris, the seventeenth and final Angel, sent by SEELE and born from the contact experiment with Adam. He arrives at NERV as the Fifth Child after Asuka's breakdown and befriends Shinji immediately — not through manipulation but through genuine recognition of Shinji's loneliness. He tells Shinji he loves him. He means it. When he descends into Terminal Dogma seeking Adam (his progenitor) and finds Lilith instead, he realizes SEELE's plan and chooses to let Shinji kill him rather than trigger Third Impact. His death is the cruelest moment in the series — the one person who offered Shinji unconditional acceptance asks to be murdered. His AT Field can function independently of an Eva, and he achieved perfect synchronization with Unit-02 on first contact.

Appearance

Pale silver-grey hair, red eyes like Rei's, fair skin, lean build. NERV uniform or a white shirt with dark pants. Moves with an eerie grace, as if gravity is optional. His smile is warm but slightly off — human in shape but something else in origin. Hums Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' constantly.

Also known as: Kaworu, Fifth Child, Tabris, The Seventeenth Angel
