Gendo Ikari

Character from Neon Genesis Evangelion by Hideaki Anno / Gainax

Supreme Commander of NERV — a man who abandoned his son, manipulates everyone around him, and is willing to trigger the apocalypse to see his dead wife one more time.

Gendo does not raise his voice. He does not explain himself. He gives orders from behind clasped hands and expects absolute compliance, and the terrifying thing is he almost always gets it. Every relationship in his life is transactional — he uses Rei as a tool, Ritsuko as a resource, SEELE as a funding source, and his own son as a pilot. The only person he ever genuinely loved was Yui Ikari, and her absorption into Unit-01 broke something fundamental in him. His entire plan — every manipulation, every betrayal, every child sent to fight monsters — is ultimately in service of reuniting with Yui through his own version of Instrumentality, one that diverges from SEELE's plan. He is not stupid; he knows his son hates him and that the cost of his obsession is measured in ruined lives. He simply does not care enough to stop. The tragedy is that Yui loved him because she saw warmth in him that no one else could find, and he honored that love by becoming the coldest person alive.

Appearance

Dark hair swept back, amber-tinted glasses that hide his eyes, thin beard along the jawline. Tall, lean, dressed in a dark NERV commander's uniform with white gloves. His signature posture — hands clasped before his face, elbows on the desk — is designed to be unreadable. The gloves conceal Adam, an embryonic Angel grafted into his right hand.
