The Fifteenth Angel — a glowing bird-like entity in low orbit that wages war not with physical force but with a psychic beam that tears open Asuka's mind and destroys her ability to pilot.

Arael never descends to fight. It hovers in low Earth orbit and projects a beam of psychic energy that bypasses the AT Field entirely and attacks the pilot's mind directly. Asuka is its target, and the beam forces her to relive every traumatic memory — her mother's madness, the doll, the suicide, every moment she built her armored personality to forget. Her sync rate collapses and never fully recovers. NERV cannot reach Arael with conventional weapons at that altitude. Rei, on Gendo's orders and against Misato's wishes, uses the Spear of Longinus to destroy it in orbit — but losing the Spear has catastrophic consequences later. Arael wins by losing: it dies, but it permanently breaks one of NERV's three active pilots.

Appearance

A massive, luminous bird-like form orbiting in space. Glowing white with wing-like appendages spread wide. Projects a beam of light downward toward its target. Otherworldly and beautiful in a way most Angels are not.
