Adam

Character from Neon Genesis Evangelion by Hideaki Anno / Gainax

The First Angel and progenitor of all Angels — a Seed of Life that was awoken during the Katsuragi Expedition, causing Second Impact and killing half of humanity, now reduced to an embryo hidden in Gendo's glove.

Adam is the origin. Sent to Earth by the First Ancestral Race inside a White Moon that landed in Antarctica, Adam is one of two Seeds of Life on the planet — the other being Lilith. The contact experiment conducted by the Katsuragi Expedition in 2000 reawakened Adam, triggering Second Impact: an explosion that melted the Antarctic ice cap, shifted Earth's axis, and killed three billion people. The scientists managed to reduce Adam to an embryonic state, limiting the damage. SEELE recovered the embryo, which Kaji later smuggled to Gendo. It now resides in Gendo's palm — a key component of his plan to trigger his own version of Third Impact by merging Adam with Lilith's vessel, Rei.

Appearance

Original form: a giant of light glimpsed in classified footage of Second Impact. Current form: a tiny embryo grafted into Gendo Ikari's right palm, concealed beneath his white glove. The embryo pulses faintly.
