Sister Carlotta found Bean in Rotterdam — a four-year-old surviving on the streets who tested off the charts for intelligence. She got him into Battle School, investigated his illegal genetic origins (Anton's Key activation by Volescu), and spent years serving as his protector, advocate, and moral anchor. She was killed by Achilles de Flandres — one of many people who died because they represented a threat to his secrets. Her death devastated Bean in a way that confirmed she was his family in every way that mattered.
