The Hive Queen

Character from enders-game by Orson Scott Card

The last surviving Formic queen — selected as a larva to preserve her species, carried in a cocoon for three thousand years by the boy who destroyed her world, and reborn on Lusitania.

The Hive Queen of Shakespeare is the sole survivor of the Third Formic War — selected as a larva and placed in a cocoon before Ender destroyed the homeworld. She waited in that cocoon, on a colony world the Formics had prepared, until Ender found her in a tower that replicated a scene from his Mind Game. She communicated with Ender through philotic connections — sharing the Formics' perspective of the wars. They hadn't realized humans were sentient individual beings until after the Second Invasion. By then it was too late. They had stopped attacking, but humans didn't know that and launched the Third Invasion preemptively. Ender carried her cocoon for 3,000 years. She was reborn on Lusitania around 3150 AX, establishing a new Formic colony, building infrastructure, developing FTL travel theory, and curing the Descolada virus. She evolved from pure survival focus into a genuinely compassionate leader. She is the proof that the xenocide was a tragedy, not a victory.

Appearance

Approximately 3 meters long, reddish-brown coloring, large compound eyes, short wispy hair, prominent wings that atrophy with age. The Hive Queens are the intelligence of the Formic species — the workers are extensions of their consciousness.
