Battle School's 'mom' — the sergeant who greeted new Launchies and served as the only adult who showed them anything resembling care in a system designed to strip it away.
Dap is the first adult Launchies meet at Battle School — their 'mom' for the initial adjustment period. In a system designed by Graff to isolate children and forge them through pressure, Dap represents the bare minimum of human care that the IF allows. He's not friendly. He's not warm. But he's present, and in Battle School, that counts for something.
In the film: large, dark-skinned man (played by Nonso Anozie). In the novels: the nurturing counterpoint to the military harshness of Battle School.
