Bonzo Madrid

Character from enders-game by Orson Scott Card

Salamander Army's honor-obsessed commander who hated Ender for being better than him — and died in a shower confrontation because his pride wouldn't let him walk away.

Bonito de Madrid y Valencia — Bonzo — is Ender's most dangerous school antagonist because his hatred isn't strategic, it's personal. He can't stand that a smaller, younger kid is better than him. He can't stand that everyone knows it. His concept of honor, shaped by a childhood that included witnessing his father's infidelity, demands that humiliation be answered with violence. He confronted Ender in the shower, where the adults had ensured no one would intervene. Ender, wet and naked and fighting for his life, threw Bonzo into a locker using the taller boy's momentum. Bonzo hit his head. He died. He was sent home in a body bag. The adults watched. The adults let it happen. Graff specifically ensured Ender would be isolated enough that Bonzo's attack was inevitable, because Graff needed Ender to learn that survival sometimes requires killing.
