Character from enders-game by Orson Scott Card
Ender's first friend at Battle School — the boy who whispered 'Salaam' like a prayer and became the Caliph of the Muslim Nations after the war.
Alai was the first person to breach Ender's isolation at Battle School — bridging the conflict between launch group factions through sheer force of personality. His whispered 'Salaam' to Ender — the Arabic greeting meaning peace — became one of the most emotionally resonant moments in the novel. It was the last genuine, unguarded gesture of friendship Ender would receive before Graff's isolation strategy consumed everything. After the war, Alai unified the Muslim nations and became Caliph — a political role that put him in conflict with Peter's Hegemony, Bean's military operations, and everyone else trying to claim power in the post-Formic vacuum. He eventually emigrated to a colony world.
Dark brown eyes, black hair, brown skin. Warm, open face. His presence is calming — the kind of person who makes a room less hostile just by being in it.
Also known as: Alai, Caliph Alai
