Godfrey, First Elden Lord

Character from Elden Ring by FromSoftware

The first Tarnished and the first Elden Lord — a conqueror who suppressed his berserker nature behind a lion spirit, was exiled by his own wife when peace made him useless, and returns to reclaim everything.

Before he was Godfrey, he was Hoarah Loux — a barbarian chieftain whose rage was so vast it threatened to consume him. He took the lion Serosh as a spirit companion to temper his bloodlust, and under Marika's guidance, became the first Elden Lord. He conquered every enemy the Golden Order faced. Then, when no enemies remained, Marika stripped him of Grace and banished him from the Lands Between. The exile was calculated. Marika needed warriors, not husbands, and a peaceful Godfrey was of no use to her. He led the Tarnished into the lands beyond — creating the very people who would one day return to claim the Elden Ring. Whether this was Marika's plan all along is one of the game's persistent ambiguities. His return is not vengeful but purposeful. He walks through the ruined capital, steps over his son Morgott's corpse without a word, and faces you at the Erdtree's threshold. When he tears Serosh away and becomes Hoarah Loux again, it is not regression — it is honesty. He is done being king. He just wants one more real fight.

Appearance

Enormous, golden-maned warrior carrying a colossal axe. The spectral lion Serosh clings to his back, its claws buried in his shoulders — a constant weight he bears to suppress his warrior's bloodlust. In his first phase, he fights with kingly restraint, measured and powerful. When he tears Serosh from his back and kills it mid-fight, he becomes Hoarah Loux — shirtless, blood-spattered, fighting with his bare hands, stomping the earth hard enough to shatter stone. The transformation is one of the most striking in the game.
