Tony is Jeff's best friend at Snow Wood Boarding School in Winters. When Jeff receives Paula's telepathic call in the middle of the night, Tony helps him escape by giving him the boost he needs to jump the school fence — no questions asked, no hesitation. He asks the player for their name later in the game, information that becomes critical during the final battle when Tony rallies his schoolmates to pray for Jeff and his friends. Series creator Shigesato Itoi confirmed that one character in EarthBound is gay, and EarthBound's localization director Marcus Lindblom later confirmed it was Tony, who is in love with Jeff. The game handles this with quiet dignity — Tony's feelings are expressed through loyalty and devotion rather than explicit declaration. At the end of the game, Tony is hurt that Jeff didn't call him, and asks Ness to tell Jeff to call. He has a heart of gold.
