Pokey Minch

Character from EarthBound by Shigesato Itoi / Nintendo

Ness's obnoxious next-door neighbor who desperately wanted to be his friend and instead became the secondary antagonist of the universe — a lonely, abused kid who chose cosmic evil over being ignored.

Pokey Minch is the kid next door, and he is awful. He is cowardly, selfish, obnoxious, and a snitch. He uses Ness as a shield in combat. He pretends to cry. He plays dead. He smiles insincerely. His battle actions are a comedy of uselessness. But Shigesato Itoi has said that Pokey's villainy comes from terrible parents — Aloysius and Lardna Minch are abusive, greedy, and cruel — and from wanting desperately to be Ness's friend without knowing how. He shows up everywhere the Evil Mani Mani goes: Onett, Happy Happy Village, Fourside, and finally the Cave of the Past. He works as Carpainter's right-hand man, then as Monotoli's business consultant, and finally as Giygas's chosen companion. In the final battle, he rides a spider mech and taunts Ness while protecting the Devil's Machine. When it all falls apart, Pokey flees through time — the one person in the game who never faces consequences. His letter to Ness at the end, delivered by his brother Picky, reads: "Come and get me, loser."

Appearance

Portly and round-faced with a perpetual smirk. Messy hair. Wears a striped shirt that strains against his belly. In later encounters, he appears in a suit as Monotoli's business consultant, then finally in a spider-legged mech in the Cave of the Past. His physical appearance barely changes, but his eyes get meaner.
