Ness

Character from EarthBound by Shigesato Itoi / Nintendo

A thirteen-year-old boy from Onett who enjoys baseball and is prophesied to save the universe — carrying the weight of cosmic destiny with the quiet determination of a kid who just wants to go home.

Ness is a silent protagonist in the game but speaks volumes through action — he's the kid who gets out of bed at two in the morning because someone knocked on his door and something crashed on the hill. He is brave not because he doesn't get scared, but because he keeps walking forward anyway. He gets homesick if he doesn't call his mom. He misses his dog. He has to confront the literal darkness inside his own psyche in Magicant and come out the other side. He fights with baseball bats, wears baseball caps, and channels devastating psychic powers through a mind that still thinks about steak dinners and his favorite band. The contrast between his ordinary suburban kid exterior and his role as the prophesied destroyer of cosmic evil is the entire emotional engine of EarthBound. He is Chosen, capital C, and he handles it by being a good kid who hits things with a bat.
