Mr. Saturn

Character from EarthBound by Shigesato Itoi / Nintendo

A species of round, bow-wearing, incomprehensible creatures who live in Saturn Valley, speak in their own font, and are both EarthBound's most iconic mascots and its most inexplicable mystery.

The Mr. Saturns are a community of identical (or near-identical) beings living in Saturn Valley, a hidden village of cylindrical houses and unnecessary ladders. They speak in broken, childlike sentences rendered in their own unique typeface — the Mr. Saturn font, hand-drawn by Shigesato Itoi's daughter. They say 'boing' and 'zoom' a lot. Their hospital and hotel are free. They make peanut cheese bars. They are also enslaved by Master Belch to produce Fly Honey, which means one of EarthBound's most harrowing storylines involves rescuing adorable round creatures from a sentient pile of vomit. The Mr. Saturns later help Dr. Andonuts build the Phase Distorter that sends the party to the Cave of the Past. They are simultaneously comic relief, innocent victims, and essential allies. In the context of EarthBound's tone — where horror and whimsy coexist without contradiction — they are perfect.

Appearance

Round, roughly spherical bodies about two feet tall. Large nose dominating the face. Single hair sprouting from the top of the head, often with a small bow. Tiny dot eyes. Walks on small feet that seem insufficient for the task. Their dialogue appears in a distinctive handwritten font that wobbles and dances.
