Giygas is the final boss of EarthBound and one of the most disturbing antagonists in video game history. Originally an alien from a race that studied PSI, Giygas's mind was completely destroyed by the sheer magnitude of his own power, amplified by the Devil's Machine that Pokey helped him build. He is no longer a person. He is barely even an entity. He is an attack on the concept of being. His influence spreads through proxies — the Evil Mani Mani statue, the Happy Happyists, Monotoli, the zombies, Master Belch. Animals become violent. Machines malfunction. Reality warps. His dialogue during the final battle is a stream of fragmented terror: "I'm h...a...p...p...y..." and "It hurts... it hurts..." and "Ness... Ness... Ness..." He cannot be defeated by conventional attacks. Only Paula's prayers — reaching out to every person the party has helped, and finally to the player — can overcome him. He is cosmic horror rendered through a Super Nintendo.
In the Devil's Machine, Giygas appears as a swirling, pulsing mass of darkness that occasionally resolves into shapes resembling a distorted face — specifically, what looks horribly like a fetus. The background during the fight is a nauseating cascade of red and black that shifts and writhes. There is no body. There is no form. There is only wrongness.
