Everdred

Character from EarthBound by Shigesato Itoi / Nintendo

Twoson's resident hustler and thief who attacks Ness on sight, loses, hands over ten thousand dollars, and dies writing haiku in a Fourside alleyway — the most honorable criminal in Eagleland.

Everdred runs Burglin Park in Twoson, an open-air market populated by vendors who operate on the fuzzy edge of legality. He attacks Ness by jumping off a roof, loses the fight, and immediately becomes helpful — telling Ness that Paula was kidnapped and giving him a wad of bills worth ten thousand dollars. The man has a code. He reappears in Fourside, wounded and dying outside Jackie's Cafe, where he reveals he was tricked by Monotoli into giving up the Mani Mani statue. He recites what he calls his 'last haiku poem,' staggers out of sight, and is never seen alive again. The Fourside Post later reports a man matching his description found dead in the street. But in Magicant, he appears as one of Ness's memories, and the merchants of Burglin Park insist his death was a hoax. Everdred occupies the exact space between comic relief and genuine tragedy that EarthBound inhabits best.

Appearance

Husky, middle-aged. Small black hat, dark glasses, mustache. Orange Hawaiian shirt that has no business being worn by a crime boss. His unused ghost sprite suggests he was originally meant to have a larger role.
