The Over City

Location from Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

The first Volcano Storyline floor — a sprawling open-air cityscape of scattered villages and abandoned ruins beneath an artificial sky, where crawlers choose their class and race.

The Over City is the dungeon's third floor and the first of six Volcano Storyline levels depicting a civilization inside an enormous dormant volcano. According to in-dungeon mythology, the entity Scolopendra unleashed a nine-tier attack that devastated the original city, leaving survivors in villages while ruins filled with hostile creatures. Upon arrival, crawlers choose a new race and class in a ceremonial selection area. The floor spans roughly three hundred thousand square kilometers of interconnected terrain. Villages range from tiny to extra-large and contain race-specific guildhalls, shops, and pubs. NPCs are biologically engineered entities owned by Borant, their memories routinely wiped between seasons. A simulated day-night cycle makes mobs significantly more dangerous after dark. Guards enforce absolute law in settlements — infractions result in death, as there are no jails. Major quests include the catastrophic Fools Who Broke the Glass, which unleashed waves of wild soul magic that turned enchanted equipment against its wearers.

Appearance

An artificial sky arches overhead creating the illusion of open air despite being deep underground. The floor is built on wooden planks with hundreds of small villages surrounded by vast stretches of crumbling urban ruins. A golden-brick entry hall with starlike ceiling guides new crawlers to their race and class selection area. Villages are patrolled by powerful guards; the ruins between them crawl with dangerous mobs.
