Item from Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman
System-generated creatures that populate each floor — ranging from mundane vermin to floor bosses capable of wiping entire crawler parties.
The dungeon's monsters are products. The Borant Corporation designs, generates, and deploys them based on floor themes, difficulty curves, and entertainment value. Floor 1 features genre-standard fare — rats, skeletons, slimes, low-level constructs — scaled to be lethal to unclassed humans but beatable with basic tactics and equipment. Deeper floors introduce creatures drawn from alien ecosystems, mythological databases, and what appears to be the fever dreams of the dungeon's designers. Monsters drop loot when killed, give experience toward leveling, and occasionally drop rare items or keys needed to access the stairwell. They respawn on timers. Boss monsters guard floor transitions and are designed to require group coordination, class synergies, or creative exploitation of the floor's mechanics. The system also deploys wandering elites — tougher versions of standard monsters that appear without warning and offer better rewards for those who survive them. Every monster is a resource and a threat simultaneously. The dungeon's economy runs on their corpses.
