Dungeon Codex

Item from Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

The system's information interface — a heads-up display and menu system providing crawlers with stats, maps, inventory access, and AI-generated item descriptions.

The Dungeon Codex is the collective term for the system interface that every crawler gains access to after completing the Tutorial in a Guild Hall. It encompasses the Heads-Up Display showing real-time health, mana, minimap, and experience; the Inventory system for managing gear and loot; the Awards and Boxes tab for unopened loot boxes; stat menus for distributing points earned through leveling; and the AI-generated descriptions that accompany every item, creature, and location in the dungeon. The System AI writes these descriptions with characteristic snark, sometimes providing crucial warnings buried in humor, other times being deliberately unhelpful for entertainment value. The codex also includes the crawler's social feed, quest logs, and access to the leaderboard. Item descriptions are public-facing — visible to the audience — but the AI occasionally hides private messages within them. The minimap shows safe rooms in green and stairwells as white squares, with fog of war obscuring unexplored areas.

Appearance

An invisible overlay projected directly into the crawler's vision. The HUD displays health bars, minimap, experience counters, and notification popups. Menu screens materialize as translucent panels showing inventory grids, stat distributions, achievement lists, and loot box queues.
