Character from Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman
A goat uplifted to bipedal sapience who became the dungeon's highest-level crawler — arrogant, lonely, and secretly terrified that the only friend he's ever made might not like him back.
His name literally means 'arrogant and stubborn,' which his former owner Miriam chose either as prophecy or aspiration. Prepotente is both of these things with the intensity of a creature who learned language and immediately used it to insult everyone in the room. He threatens Carl on first meeting, mocks allies and enemies with equal contempt, and stacks debuffs on monsters with the methodical malice of someone who enjoys watching things suffer slowly. But underneath the bluster is a profoundly lonely creature experiencing emotions he has no framework for. His dependence on Miriam is absolute — her temporary absence triggers a berserk panic attack. His emotional confession that Carl is his 'best friend' is delivered with the vulnerability of someone who's never said those words before and isn't sure they'll be reciprocated. He's a goat who became a person and discovered that personhood mostly involves being afraid. The audience loves him because he's an asshole. The readers love him because he's trying not to be.
Originally a brown-and-white Boer goat, now a bipedal Caprid with human-like hands featuring stubby fingers and long, curled black fingernails. Wears a dark robe and smells like a barn. Bears a glowing satanic goat tattoo on one hand and the Night Wyrm's tattoo on his left elbow. Speaks in a nasally British accent, like a spoiled prince with hooves.
