Crawler Militia

Character from Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

Loose alliances of human crawlers banding together for survival — fractious, desperate, and split between those who cooperate and those who've decided other humans are easier prey than monsters.

Not every crawler is a hero. The dungeon strips away civilization fast, and within the first few floors, human social dynamics reassert themselves in ugly ways. Some crawlers form genuine alliances — sharing resources, coordinating on boss fights, protecting weaker members. Others form gangs that prey on fellow crawlers, stealing loot and equipment from those too weak to fight back. Most fall somewhere in between: willing to cooperate when it's advantageous, willing to betray when it's necessary. The militia isn't a single organization — it's a term for the various human groups that form and dissolve as crawlers descend. Some have leaders who emerged through competence, others through brutality. The dungeon encourages PvP through certain mechanics and discourages it through others, creating a constant tension between cooperation and competition. A new crawler's first major decision is often social: who do you trust, who do you join, and what do you do when your group encounters another group with the same resources and different intentions?

Also known as: the militia, crawler groups, other crawlers, survivor bands
