Chapterhouse

Location from Dune by Frank Herbert

The Bene Gesserit's last stronghold — a planet being deliberately transformed into a new Arrakis to secure an independent spice supply as the old order collapses.

Chapterhouse exists in transition — the sound of wind through dying trees gives way to the hiss of sand a few kilometers further on. The Bene Gesserit work here with grim purpose, knowing they are deliberately killing a living world to ensure their order's survival. The sandtrout are spreading, locking away water, creating the desert conditions that will eventually support sandworms and spice. The mood is one of controlled desperation. The Sisterhood has retreated here because everywhere else has fallen or will fall. The libraries contain copies of everything — breeding records, political archives, the collected memories of every Reverend Mother. This is the backup, the last copy, the final redoubt.

Appearance

A temperate world undergoing deliberate desertification. From orbit, expanding sand zones eat into formerly green continents. On the ground: Bene Gesserit compounds of severe stone architecture surrounded by dying forests and advancing dunes. Sandtrout introduced from Arrakis are visibly transforming the water table. Some regions still green; others already full desert.

Also known as: Chapterhouse Planet, the Bene Gesserit stronghold
