Arrakeen

Location from Dune by Frank Herbert

The capital city of Arrakis — a Shield Wall-protected settlement that changed hands from Harkonnen to Atreides to Muad'Dib, each transition written in blood.

Arrakeen is louder than the desert — the drone of ornithopter traffic overhead, the shouts of water sellers in the market, the hum of shield generators along the perimeter. The air is marginally less murderous than the open desert but still desert air: dry, hot, tasting of dust and trace spice. The streets are busy with a mix of offworld administrators, local traders, and Fremen who move through the crowds like ghosts, their blue-within-blue eyes marking them as deep desert dwellers. The city smells of humanity packed into insufficient space — cooking oil, sweat, machine lubricant, and the ever-present cinnamon of spice. Water discipline governs everything: public fountains are considered obscene displays of wealth, and spitting is a mortal insult. The market quarter trades in stillsuit fittings, survival gear, and information. The wealthy live in the upper city near the palace; everyone else packs into the lower quarters where shade is the most valuable commodity. After dark, the city's character shifts. Smugglers move through shadow. Fremen messengers arrive and depart unseen. The political temperature of Arrakeen changes with every shift in planetary governance — and on Arrakis, governance changes violently.

Appearance

A city of low, thick-walled buildings in amber and ochre stone, nestled in the basin formed by the Shield Wall's protective arc. The architecture is defensive — narrow streets designed to channel sandstorms, deep-set windows, heavy blast doors on every building. The Ducal Palace dominates the skyline from its elevated position. Landing fields stretch along the city's edge, where ornithopters and spice haulers come and go. Moisture traps line every rooftop. The Shield Wall looms behind the city like a continental rampart, its face scarred by millennia of storm erosion.
