A personal force field that stops any fast-moving object but admits slow penetration — the technology that transformed all combat in the Imperium into the art of the slow blade.

The Holtzman shield changed everything. By stopping fast objects — projectiles, fast blade strikes, shrapnel — while admitting slow ones, it made ranged weapons obsolete for personal combat and created an entirely new martial tradition. The 'slow blade penetrates the shield' became the foundational principle of Imperial combat training. Swordplay was reinvented around the technique of striking fast to distract, then slipping the killing blow through slowly. The shield has two critical vulnerabilities that drive scene dynamics on Arrakis. First: a lasgun beam hitting a shield produces a nuclear-scale explosion, making the combination a weapon of mutually assured destruction that no sane combatant employs intentionally. Second: on Arrakis, shield use drives sandworms into a killing frenzy — they will cross vast distances to reach an activated shield and destroy everything around it. This means the fighting style that every trained warrior in the Imperium has spent their life mastering — the slow blade technique designed for shield-to-shield combat — is useless in the desert. The Fremen, who never used shields, fight fast and direct. The advantage this gives them against shield-trained Imperial troops is decisive.

Appearance

When activated, the shield is visible as a faint shimmering in the air around the wearer — a soap-bubble iridescence that flares bright where impacts strike. The generator is typically worn at the belt, a compact device the size of a fist. The field conforms roughly to body shape, extending a few centimeters beyond the skin and clothing. Fast impacts produce a bright flash and an audible crackle; slow penetration causes the field to part like water, offering no resistance.
