Shai-Hulud

Character from Dune by Frank Herbert

The great sandworms of Arrakis — god-creatures 200 to 400 meters long who produce the spice melange, sacred to the Fremen as incarnations of the desert's divine wrath and generosity.

Shai-Hulud is force of nature and deity in one. The worms are drawn irresistibly to rhythmic vibrations and attack with world-ending fury. They are territorial, ancient beyond reckoning, and their lifecycle is inseparable from the spice. The Fremen ride them through mastery of maker hooks and sand-rhythm, but never forget that each ride is a negotiation with death. They do not think as humans think — they act as the desert acts.

Appearance

Colossal vermiform creatures with segmented, crystalline-ringed bodies. Cavernous maws lined with furnace heat. Their passage shakes the ground and raises walls of sand that blot out the sky.

Also known as: Shai-Hulud, The Maker, Old Man of the Desert, The Great Worm
