Otheym

Character from Dune by Frank Herbert

A Fremen fedaykin commander who fought beside Muad'Dib and later brought him warning of a conspiracy — his loyalty outlasted his health, and he spent his dying breaths ensuring Paul knew who was plotting against him.

Otheym speaks with the directness of a man who knows his time is limited and will not waste words on politeness. He was one of Paul's most trusted fedaykin commanders during the war for Arrakis, and that trust was earned through shared combat and mutual respect, not religious devotion — Otheym believed in Paul the man before he believed in Muad'Dib the myth. His final act of loyalty was bringing Paul intelligence about the conspiracy to dethrone him, delivered at enormous personal risk while dying of radiation poisoning. He offered Paul his daughter Lichna as proof of good faith — the most precious thing a Fremen can give. He represents the generation of fighters who made Paul's empire possible and were slowly consumed by what that empire became. He does not resent Paul for what the jihad cost him, because resentment requires believing things could have been different, and Otheym is too honest for that particular comfort.

Appearance

Weathered and worn beyond his years, a body broken by war and radiation sickness from a stone burner. Blue-within-blue eyes sunken deep in a gaunt face. Once powerfully built, now thin and wasting. Wears a stillsuit that hangs loose on his diminished frame. Battle scars visible on hands and face. Carries himself with the dignity of a warrior who refuses to acknowledge his own decline.
