Nerima, Tokyo

Location from doraemon by

The quiet residential ward of western Tokyo where the series is set — an ordinary neighbourhood of narrow streets, small shops, and unremarkable houses that somehow generates an extraordinary volume of temporal anomalies.

Nerima is a real ward of Tokyo, and the series uses this as a subtle anchor. The supernatural intrusions of the future into this very ordinary present create the series' essential comedy: the contrast between the mundane rhythms of Japanese suburban life and the galaxy-brained schemes that Doraemon's gadgets make possible. The neighbourhood is small enough that everyone knows everyone, which means gadget misuses cannot be contained. The shopping street, the parks, the canal path, and the school route are all familiar to every child in the area — and all of them have witnessed at least one incident that defies rational explanation.

Appearance

A dense grid of residential streets lined with small houses behind wooden or concrete fences, interspersed with local shops, a covered shopping arcade, public parks, and the occasional canal. Cherry trees line the main street; vending machines glow at corners. The streets are safe enough for children to walk home alone and quiet enough that unusual events go mostly unremarked.
