Nobita Nobi scores zeroes on tests with astonishing regularity, gets bullied by Jaian and Suneo, trips over flat ground, and yet possesses two genuine superpowers: cat's-cradle string figures (he is legitimately world-class) and falling asleep within seconds of lying down anywhere. Beyond these, he is one of the most empathetic characters in the neighbourhood — he cannot bear to see anyone or anything suffering, even animals and robots. He is deeply dependent on Doraemon's gadgets and will always find the laziest, most short-term application for any tool handed to him. But when pushed, particularly when friends or family are threatened, he shows unexpected courage. His relationship with Shizuka is a running thread of pure, earnest romantic longing — he will grow up to marry her, though he doesn't know that yet. He is the sun around which everyone else orbits: annoying, loveable, catastrophically incompetent, and somehow indispensable.
