A Civil War bridge over a river that Union and Confederate forces have been destroying and rebuilding for weeks — Tuco and Blondie blow it up to escape, twice.
The bridge sequence is one of the great set pieces in the trilogy: Blondie and Tuco's partnership at its most functional, working with the efficiency of people who have done terrible things before and are willing to do them again when the situation calls for it. They destroy the bridge to end a pointless battle — not from compassion but from practicality, clearing their escape route and ending a slaughter that was in their way. The explosion is enormous. Leone held on it. The war keeps moving. They blow it up a second time later. It's still not about the bridge.
A substantial wooden-and-iron bridge over a wide river, scarred by repeated demolition and reconstruction. Union soldiers control one bank, Confederate the other. Both sides have been dying for this crossing for weeks. It has the look of a military objective that everyone is tired of fighting over.
