A border town with the most secure bank in the Southwest — which is why El Indio chose it, and why Manco and Mortimer followed him there.
El Paso is the site of the heist in For a Few Dollars More — the most ambitious criminal operation any villain in the trilogy attempts. El Indio chose it for the bank's reputation: if you can rob the most secure bank on the border, you've made a statement that travels faster than you do. The bounty hunters follow him there not to stop the heist but to let it happen and trap him after, when the gang has what they came for and is focused on the escape. The town is a mechanism — not the point, but the place where the point happens.
A larger, more established border town than San Miguel. The bank is its defining feature: solid construction, a vault, a reputation for security that turns out to be slightly optimistic. Constructed in the Almería desert for filming, it has the feeling of a real place that knows it is being used as a proving ground.
